The process of discovering that cherished ideas about the nature of oneself, another, the members of a group, or human society as a whole are contradicted by direct life experience. While often viewed in a negative light, disillusionment is an inevitable consequence of a sincere pursuit of truth and justice, and a necessary step in the development of the nuanced understanding and personal strength necessary to transform one's own life or contribute to the improvement of society. Notably, many of the great moral leaders of history worked through repeated bouts of disillusionment, emerging, sometimes after years of struggle, with greater humility, a deeper vision, and often a more courageous, imaginative approach to their personal lives and work.
