Animal welfare

Work carried out with the intent of improving the health and well-being of animals.

Common Misuse: When those engaged in the use and killing of animals for profit say that they are concerned about the "welfare" of the animals they are exploiting, they cannot help but contradict themselves. Typically, the use of animals for profit includes several if not all of the following: confinement, social deprivation, mutilation, reproductive manipulation, indignity and premature death. Were one human to carry such acts out on another human for the purposes of making a profit, it would be hard for anyone to accept claims that the perpetrator is concerned for the well-being or welfare of the person being harmed. The situation is no different in the case of humans using and killing animals for profit claiming to be concerned for their welfare.
